Step into History at USS Texas (BB-35)
USS Texas (BB-35) represents an entire era of naval warfare concentrated into a single hull. As a New York-class dreadnought launched in 1912 and commissioned in 1914, she bridges pre–World War I design thinking and the heavily mechanized conflicts that followed. Her service record stretches from the tense prewar intervention off Mexico after the Tampico Incident, through North Sea patrols in World War I, to hard, measurable work in World War II: convoy escort duty across the Atlantic, naval gunfire in support of the North African landings, shore bombardment off Normandy, and later Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Technically, Texas was a pathfinder. She was the first U.S. battleship to mount dedicated anti-aircraft guns, the first American warship to employ centralized fire-control directors and range-keepers, and among the earliest to receive production radar. Even her 14-inch main battery, world-first on a battleship, marks a transition in naval gunnery. Preserved today under Texas stewardship and long associated with the San Jacinto battleground area east of Houston, the ship stands as the only surviving Allied capital ship to have served in both world wars, and a rare chance to study dreadnought-era engineering at full scale.
