SS Jeremiah O'Brien
Step into History at SS Jeremiah O'Brien
Moored at Pier 45 in San Francisco’s working waterfront, SS Jeremiah O’Brien represents the Liberty ship as it actually went to war, rather than as a reconstructed showpiece. Built in 56 days in South Portland, Maine, in 1943, this EC2-S-C1 cargo vessel served in Atlantic convoys, supported Operation Neptune during the Normandy landings with repeated cross-Channel runs, and later operated across the South Pacific and Indian Ocean. For those interested in wartime logistics, the ship offers a tangible study in standardized mass-production engineering, from its triple-expansion steam plant—recognized as a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark—to the utilitarian hull form that underpinned Allied supply chains. Preserved by the National Liberty Ship Memorial after three decades in the Suisun Bay reserve fleet, Jeremiah O’Brien is one of only a handful of surviving Liberty ships still afloat and operational. Its continued upkeep highlights the practical challenges of maintaining steam-era marine technology in a saltwater, urban environment, while its National Historic Landmark status underscores the often-overlooked merchant marine contribution to twentieth-century naval warfare.
