McDowell Battlefield
Step into History at McDowell Battlefield
McDowell Battlefield occupies the steep ridges and narrow valley where, on May 8, 1862, Stonewall Jackson’s Shenandoah Valley campaign shifted momentum. The ground here, anchored by Sitlington’s Hill above the Bull Pasture River, illustrates how terrain dictated tactics in the mountain war of 1862. Jackson’s Confederates held the heights while Union forces under Robert Milroy and Robert C. Schenck attacked uphill, a dynamic that military historians can still trace in the contours, timberlines, and road traces of the old Parkersburg–Staunton Turnpike. The subsequent Union withdrawal opened the way for Jackson’s continuing operations in the Valley, giving this relatively small engagement outsized operational significance. Today the setting remains largely rural and mountainous, which helps preserve the scale of the battlefield and the distances infantry had to cover under fire. In combination with nearby fields such as Camp Allegheny to the west, McDowell offers a concentrated look at how both armies maneuvered along the Allegheny front, balancing logistics, topography, and command decisions in a harsh environment that shaped every move more than any formal doctrine.
