Malvern Hill Battlefield
Step into History at Malvern Hill Battlefield
Malvern Hill Battlefield preserves the ground where the Seven Days Battles reached their violent conclusion on July 1, 1862. The modest rise along Willis Church Road, only about 130 feet above the surrounding terrain, gave Union V Corps a commanding artillery platform that proved decisive. Here, the landscape itself becomes the primary artifact: open fields that once forced Confederate infantry to cross hundreds of yards under concentrated Federal guns, and gentle slopes that explain why artillery dominated the engagement. The battle was a tactical Union victory, yet strategically hollow, as George B. McClellan soon withdrew to Harrison’s Landing and the Peninsula Campaign collapsed. For students of command and control, Malvern Hill illustrates how flawed maps, delayed movements, and confused orders within Robert E. Lee’s army produced piecemeal frontal assaults against a well-sited defense. Seen in relation to nearby Glendale and First Deep Bottom fields, this ground forms part of a wider operational chessboard east of Richmond, where terrain, range tables, and staff work mattered as much as personal bravery.
