Kernstown Battlefield
Step into History at Kernstown Battlefield
Kernstown Battlefield lies on the southern approaches to Winchester, where the First Battle of Kernstown unfolded on March 23, 1862, opening Stonewall Jackson’s Shenandoah Valley Campaign. The ground that is now preserved witnessed one of Jackson’s rare tactical defeats, brought on by faulty intelligence that badly underestimated the Union force under Col. Nathan Kimball. Yet the engagement had outsized strategic weight: by striking here, Jackson helped fix Union troops in the Valley, complicating Federal plans to shift manpower to the Peninsula Campaign against Richmond. For students of command and operational art, the field illustrates how misjudged reconnaissance, terrain along the Valley Pike corridor, and the use of ridgelines such as Sandy Ridge and Prichard’s Hill combined to shape the fight. Set amid a mix of open fields and gently rolling ground typical of the lower Valley, Kernstown forms part of a broader network of Winchester-area battlefields, allowing close study of how this crossroads region repeatedly influenced Civil War campaigns.
