Indiana Military Museum
Step into History at Indiana Military Museum
Situated on the former Blackford Window Glass Company site in Vincennes, the Indiana Military Museum has grown from Jim Osborne’s childhood collection of surplus gear into one of the Midwest’s more ambitious privately founded military museums. Established in 1982 and opened to the public in 1984, it has repeatedly expanded its footprint and exhibits, culminating in a relocation in 2013 to a 14-acre tract close to George Rogers Clark National Historical Park, placing twentieth-century military technology within sight of an earlier frontier conflict landscape. The collection ranges from restored ground vehicles and aircraft—including acquisitions such as A4D and F-16 airframes, a Lim-5R, and a T-34 tank—to the sail of the submarine USS Indianapolis, a powerful material link to the cruiser whose loss remains central to U.S. naval memory. Interior exhibits, including a 1940s home, factory setting, and damaged French cathedral, provide context for how industrial capacity, civilian life, and urban destruction intersected with modern warfare. A research library and seasonal battle reenactments further anchor the museum as a working site of interpretation rather than a static display yard.
