Davis' Mills Battle Site
Step into History at Davis' Mills Battle Site
Davis’ Mills Battle Site occupies a quiet rise above the Wolf River that once anchored a small milling settlement on the Mississippi Central Railroad. On December 21, 1862, Confederate cavalry under Major General Earl Van Dorn struck the Federal garrison here, part of wider operations against Union supply and communications in the region. The terrain itself mattered: a flour mill, sawmill, and a wooden trestle on the rail line concentrated military value in what would otherwise have been an obscure crossing. Federal troops adapted an ancient Indian mound into an improvised fortification, a rare instance where pre-contact earthworks intersect visibly with Civil War field engineering. The site’s later recognition on the National Register of Historic Places reflects not monumental architecture, but the survival of a landscape where transportation, logistics, and defensive use of ground can still be read. Traces such as a tree once carved with names, dates, and regimental information point to the personal level of the campaign, anchoring the larger operational story in specific human presence along this rural stretch of Highway 7 near present-day Michigan City.
