Battle of Fort Stedman
Step into History at Battle of Fort Stedman
The ground around Fort Stedman marks the site of the Confederacy’s final major offensive effort during the Siege of Petersburg, a pre-dawn assault on March 25, 1865 that briefly ruptured the Union lines before collapsing under counterattack. Here, Maj. Gen. John B. Gordon’s attack force struck one of the most vulnerable points in the Federal fortifications, a work named for Union colonel Griffin A. Stedman, killed in the area in 1864. The fort’s position, close to Confederate lines and near key Union supply infrastructure, made it a logical choice for a last gamble intended to relieve pressure on Petersburg and threaten City Point. For students of military operations, the landscape illustrates the geometry of trench warfare, the importance of field engineering, and the consequences of committing a weakened army to a high–risk breakthrough attempt. Interpreted today within the broader Petersburg National Battlefield, the Fort Stedman sector helps frame the rapid unraveling of Confederate capacity in the war’s final weeks, linking tactics on a narrow front to the strategic collapse that followed within days at Petersburg and, soon after, at Appomattox.
