Aldie Battlefield
Step into History at Aldie Battlefield
Aldie Battlefield occupies the ground where, on June 17, 1863, Union and Confederate cavalry collided during the Gettysburg Campaign. Here in Loudoun County, J.E.B. Stuart’s troopers worked to shield Robert E. Lee’s northward march along the Shenandoah Valley, while Union cavalry under David McM. Gregg and Judson Kilpatrick fought to pierce that screen and gain intelligence on Confederate movements. The site’s significance lies less in sweeping maneuvers than in its intricate road network: near Aldie, the Little River Turnpike met the Ashby’s Gap and Snicker’s Gap turnpikes, routes that threaded through the Blue Ridge into the valley. Control of these junctions meant control of reconnaissance and approach. The landscape of ridges, stone walls, and narrow curves—especially along the Snicker’s Gap road—shaped the brutal close-quarters fighting, including the near-destruction of elements of the 1st Massachusetts Cavalry. For military history enthusiasts, Aldie offers a chance to study how terrain, road geometry, and cavalry doctrine intersected in the high-stakes prelude to Gettysburg.
