21st Georgia Volunteer Infantry
The 21st Georgia Volunteer Infantry is a Civil War reenactment group that strives to honor the bravery and sacrifice of the original regiment. Originally mustered into the Confederate Army between June and August 1861, the 21st Georgia was made up of soldiers from counties surrounding Atlanta, stretching westward towards the Alabama border. Throughout the war, they saw action in over a hundred battles and skirmishes, making them one of the most active regiments in the Confederate Army.
As part of Robert E. Lee's renowned Army of Northern Virginia, the 21st Georgia participated in major campaigns and battles on the eastern front such as the Valley Campaign, Seven Days Battle, Second Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania, and Petersburg. Known for their courage and aggressive fighting style, they suffered heavy casualties throughout the war.
At Appomattox, after mustering over 600 men at its peak strength, only 53 members of the 21st Georgia laid down their muskets and returned home. The reenactment group aims to honor these valiant individuals who fought for their cause as well as acknowledge the important role played by women and children who supported them.
One unique aspect of this group is that it operates as a family unit where all members camp together and share meals at campfire gatherings. Most events are weekend-long affairs that begin on Friday night and continue until Sunday afternoon. Participants stay in period-correct tents and cook food over an open fire just like soldiers did during the Civil War. These immersive experiences create unforgettable memories for members who bond over card games or conversations around the warmth of a campfire.
The 21st Georgia consists of four distinct groups - military, civilian, medical, and musician - all working together to create a diverse and educational presentation for both members and audiences. This close-knit living creates deep and long-lasting friendships among members who work together to recreate the lives of soldiers during the Civil War. The 21st Georgia reenactment group is dedicated to preserving the memory of this valiant regiment and educating others about the realities of war.
