The Friends of Monmouth Battlefield, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation, protection, and historical interpretation of Monmouth Battlefield and related sites. Founded in 1990, the Friends group was granted official recognition by the State of New Jersey as an ORFO – or Organized Friends of Parks – organization. This allows the Friends to work together with state government in order to safeguard, conserve, and interpret this important aspect of American history.
The Friends are committed to their mission on many fronts: they organize educational programs and lectures that bring both adults and children closer to their heritage; they raise money for preservation efforts through donations and memberships; they provide support to park operations that keep Monmouth Battlefield open to the public; they initiate research projects into the history of the park; and they even volunteer directly at Monmouth Battlefield – planting trees, picking up trash, engaging in clean-up initiatives, etc. Thanks to their dedication, visitors can experience for themselves what life was like during the war-torn era when General Washington led his troops against General Cornwallis’ British regiment.
In addition to its work at Monmouth Battlefield, the group also works in cooperation with other historic sites around New Jersey such as Freehold’s Liberty Hall Museum and Monmouth County’s Allaire State Park Historic Village. By preserving these places through education and awareness projects as well as thoughtful advocacy initiatives, The Friends are able to ensure that future generations will be able to enjoy these locations just as we have done today.
