Mississippi Civil War Battlefields Directory

The state of Mississippi played a critical role during the American Civil War. It was one of the first states to secede from the Union and is known for its many battles and strategic military campaigns that helped shape the outcome of the war.

On January 9, 1861, Mississippi became the second state to secede from the Union after South Carolina. This set off a chain reaction with other Southern states eventually seceding as well. Many citizens of Mississippi felt that their state’s interests were not being taken into consideration by Congress and they wanted to protect their right to own slaves. After much debate, a convention was called in Jackson where a resolution was presented that declared “all political ties binding this State to the Government of the United States are hereby dissolved.”

The state of Mississippi saw many battles during the Civil War as it served as an important strategic location for both sides. One of the most significant battles on its soil was at Vicksburg where General Grant successfully captured it after a long siege in 1863, cutting off major supply routes for Confederate troops all around it. Other important battles included Port Gibson, Raymond and Champion Hill which resulted in Union victories. These victories would go on to help them win control over major parts of Mississippi including Natchez and Jackson which provided valuable resources for both sides during this time period.
